Written by Patrick Stockdale | June 7, 2022

We've compiled data from thousands of chart patterns found across a large number of financial markets to analyze their accuracy and effectiveness when used in technical analysis.

The chart pattern data is compiled over a period from 2009 to 2022 with over 204,671 chart patterns assessed over different timeframes from 1-minute charts, 5-minute charts, hourly charts, and daily charts.

The stock markets used to compile these chart pattern statistics include the S&P500 Index, the Nasdaq 100 Index, the New York Stock Exchange, the Russell 2000 Index, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and all the stocks listed on these exchanges.

The forex markets used to compile these chart pattern statistics include EUR/USD, EUR/GBP, USD/CAD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, GBP/JPY, AUD/USD, EUR/CHF, EUR/JPY, NZD/USD, EUR/AUD and the US Dollar Index.

The commodities markets used to compile these chart pattern statistics include Copper, Gold, Silver, Palladium, Platinum, Crude Oil Brent, Crude Oil West Texas, Heating Oil, Natural Gas, Corn, Cocoa, Cotton, Lean Hogs, Orange Juice, Soybean, Soybean Oil, Soybean Meal, Sugar Raw, Sugar White and Wheat.

The treasury markets used to compile these chart pattern statistics include the US T-Note 10 Year, the US T-Note 5 Year, the US T-Note 2 Year, UK Gilt, Japan JGB, Euro BTO and the Euro Bobl.

Choose from a specific chart pattern to get its statistics below:

These chart pattern statistics are compiled by backtesting using python scripts to find the patterns and assess their accuracy. All data was then assessed by human raters to confirm their accuracy. This process took over three months to go through every price chart and data set.

The chart pattern data provided should be used for information and educational purposes only and it should not be used as investment advice to trade or invest in any particular market with any specific chart pattern.

This data is compiled in a simulated environment and does not take into account an important element of liquidity.

This means real-life results versus simulated results can vary quite substantially as liquidity plays an important role in getting the correct entry price, stop-loss price and exit price when using these chart patterns to trade or invest.

Predefined Rules We Used For Calculating These Chart Pattern Statistics

In calculating this chart pattern data, we made certain rules that a pattern needed to meet to be included in our dataset.

The rules used to calculate these chart pattern statistics include:

  • A specific chart pattern outcome is added to our successful count if it reaches a price target that is one times the risk before hitting a stop-loss level i.e. we assumed a risk-reward ratio of 1:1 when calculating this data.
  • A specific chart pattern outcome is added to our failure count if it reaches the stop-loss level before the price target level
  • A specific chart pattern had one entry price, one stop-loss price and one price target price.
  • A specific chart pattern is only entered into once

Important Things To Consider About This Chart Pattern Statistics Data

There are three very important considerations that readers should be aware of with this chart pattern statistical data. These three considerations are:

  1. Liquidity was not taken into account: When calculating this chart pattern data, we assumed one entry price, one price target price and one stop-loss price. We did not take into account whether there was liquidity at these prices. This means that real-world trading of these patterns can be substantially different than these simulated results.
  2. Past performance is not indicative of future results: This data was compiled by backtesting previous market history and was not compiled in real-time. Any interesting data findings from historical data should not be assumed to continue into the future.
  3. Chart patterns were analyzed on a group of price chart timeframes only: The chart pattern data was compiled from patterns only found on the 1-minute chart, 5-minute chart, hourly chart and daily chart. All other timeframes were not counted.
